Helicopters
An unbiased view about the evil things.
Flying a model helicopter has been likened to balancing a ball bearing on a sheet of glass. If the mechanics of the chopper have been adjusted and aligned very well, it is similar to having a flat piece of glass. If the heli is not set up properly, it is like having a convex piece of glass where the bearing wants to keep rolling off to one side.
It is actually harder than that, you need to add someone with a hair dryer trying to blow it around, plus the problem of trying to control the height with the throttle stick, the one bit of good news is the gyro locks the tail and makes a good job of yaw control
From from Cervantes'
Don Quixote "I intend to do battle with them and slay them. With their spoils we shall begin to be rich for this is a righteous war and the removal of so foul a brood from off the face of the earth is a service God will bless."
Although I have never tilted at helicopters, yet, I did and still have a slanted view of them.
So it was a surprise to many and myself when I bought a Shogun 400; flying has always seemed magical to me, to see something float silently though the air, it doesn't matter whether it's an AirBus A 380 a or a paper dart.
A helicopter does not have this magic, a huge amount of power and noise just to stay in the same place.
So why have I bought one? Perhaps it's comment from the elderly when I try prop hanging " he shouldn't be doing that, if he wants to hover he should buy a helicopter" - No - I think it was to find out if I could fly one.
Next week my experience, learning to hover

New Helicopter site
http://www.vrhc.co.uk/

I am starting a new personal web site covering Radio Controlled Helicopters and as you may know the main problem with starting something new is getting the message out to those who may be interested.

It is primarily (though not exclusively) for 'Vintage' though for helicopters this could mean anything that is no longer available!!!  For information I have a collection of over 100 (one hundred) helicopters both old and new covering the period from the first Schluter Cobra (under restoration) right up to the latest T-rex 250.  There are also examples of most makes i.e. Morley, Kavan, Schluter, Kyosho, Kalt, Century, Vario etc, etc.

I have attached a 'flyer' for my site and I would be very grateful if you could put a copy on your clubs notice board.  Alternatively if you have a club E-mail notification system, if you could send a copy to your members by that method it would be much appreciated.

I would also be grateful if your 'webmaster' would put a link on your own web site and if he could let me know then I will return the compliment.

Yours faithfully,

Joe W Richardson

The paper plane contest will take place after the club meeting Wed 21st Jan 8.00PM at the Bear.

If you want to practice try this, my best is 114 metres http://flightsimx.archive.amnesia.com.au/  Flash paper dart game

Safety, is this guy serious?

"You'll have someone's eye out with that!"

My mum would often tell me this when I was dangerously wielding a paper bag or something, but Paper Airplanes can be dangerous, so it's always best to take care and remember a few common sense rules, to make life safer for everybody:-

  • Never throw planes at or towards people
  • Never throw planes over people, they may take a dive at the wrong moment
  • Always warn people around you that you are about to throw a plane, so they can keep a look out for it coming at them
  • Remember planes don't always fly as planned, a plane may take a 90 degree turn in the middle of its flight, and hit someone you thought was well out of the way.

If you are going to be throwing them in a crowd, or to each other, or if you are making planes for kids, there are steps to be taken to make things safer.

Most of the danger in a plane comes from the pointed nose, so by cutting this off, and cutting so as to leave a curved edge, you have made it that bit safer.

Without cutting, you can fold back the nose. Using the Classic Dart as an example, do the following between stages IV and V :-
