 Indoor update

The Gloucester Model Flying Club indoor flying season for 2009-10 starts at 1800 hrs on Saturday 3rd October 2009 at the Bentham Country Club.

Last season proved very successful and was our first full year flying in the dome at Bentham. Next Saturday we start our fourth year of indoor flying and its popularity looks set to continue.

Over the past three years many have mastered the skills of indoor flying whether fixed wing or rotary, and with the move to a larger venue larger faster models are being flown indoors quite often with a great deal of enthusiasm.

The only comment (from several quarters) last year was that beginners and newcomers to indoor flying were being over shadowed by the experts. Also the smaller more fragile models were coming of rather badly in midair’s with larger models.

With a large number of new smaller mini/micro models becoming readily available many of these will find there way into fliers hands and are deserving of some air time of there own. Similarly with helicopters the growing number of proficient fliers has increased over the years, these fliers need more space in which to manoeuvre without beginners getting in their way, just as beginners need time to themselves.

We are going to stay with the very successful slot system but with a small addition. For a trail we are extending the flying time to 2-½ hrs. Giving two extra 12-minute slots (+6 mins for those who can add up).

The slots will be divided up as follows.

4        Helicopter only slots. Preference will be given to intermediate and experienced pilots, i.e. those who can fly circuits, figure of eights etc. right up to full 3D.

4         Fixed wing only slots. Preference will be given to intermediate and

experienced pilots flying larger aerobatic and scale models.

4    Combined beginners helicopters and mini/micro fixed wing slot.

One side of the dome (left probably) will be for beginners to helicopters

hovering only. The other side (right probably) will be for mini/micro

models only. Small (circa 18”/2ozs) depron, EPP balsa type

           models.

Free flight can fly at any time when they feel safe to get a flight in.

“Club X-spurts” can use the beginners helicopter slots to carry out trimming/setting flights as long as it’s hovering and floor space permits.

The running order for the evening will vary but will be displayed with a time for the start of each slot displayed. You can fly in as many slots as you wish but please be ready to fly when a slot starts. Remember the aim is to get you as much flying as possible during the evening.

Cost will remain the same as last year £5.00 per evening.

Hope you all have a safe and enjoyable winters flying indoors.

Chairman GMFC.

The New Strip

From Monday March 16th the club will be flying from the new strip located within the Autograss Track.  Notices and directions have been erected.

Please do not drive around farmers fields follow the signs. Please follow the tracks across both fields.

Please close the gate off the main road at all times. That's close the clasp and spin the numbers. Do not leave open because somebody else is following, they may get held up. Either wait at the gate until they catch up or close and lock it.

See new layout of flying area and of strip New pics.)

The new strip seems to have met with favour of those who have used it. Flying with your back to the sun in the afternoon is very welcome.

Warning DX7 Owners.

With the growing number of Spektrum transmitters in the club the following was found on the Spektrum Web site. Thanks to Darren for passing on.

Warning concerning use of non-standard transmitter batteries

Spektrum transmitters are designed to be operated on 9.6 or 4.8 volt Ni-cad or NiMh batteries only. Use of Li-Po or other power devices operating at higher voltage can add heat to the system, possibly overloading the power regulating transistor for reduced output. Despite what aftermarket battery manufacturers might suggest, use of non-standard batteries offers decreased reliability of your Spektrum. Our service department has received failures associated with Li-Po packs.

For increased flight time, please use increased capacity NiMh cells, like the JRPB5011 2500 Sanyo pack. Charge these packs with the JRPC223 9.6 volt 270mAh output charger.

Note from Chairman.

Having just installed Zippy 2500 mAh 3 cell packs in my DX7 I have noticed the rear of the transmitter getting quite warm.

The problem is as Spektrum state that 3 LiPo's give an extra volt over 8 NiCds or NiMhs. I recently converted my trusty old Multiplex Twinstar from 8 NiCds to 3 LiPo's and very quickly burnt out both motors.
